Fumigation Burglary Prevention
Homes undergoing fumigation treatments can become targets for theft.
Even though the home is tented and unsafe to enter, criminals may use protective gear to cut into fumigation tents and steal valuables.
How to protect yourself
Research pest control companies
Take time to carefully evaluate companies before selecting a provider. Ask questions such as:
- What are your policies if a burglary occurs during fumigation?
- Do you use third-party contractors to place and remove the tent?
- What security measures are in place during the fumigation process?
- Do you offer video surveillance during fumigation?
Request a vacation check
The Lakewood Sheriff’s Station offers free vacation checks while residents are away from home. Deputies will periodically check on your home while it is unoccupied.
To request a vacation check, visit the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station website (opens in a new tab) and look for the Vacation Check form near the bottom of the page.
You may also call the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station at 562-623-3500 for assistance.
Talk to trusted neighbors
Let trusted neighbors know your home will be tented and ask them to watch for unusual activity.
Provide your contact information and let them know about any scheduled services so they can recognize normal activity.
Remove valuables from your home
Remove valuables and important items before fumigation whenever possible. Your home may be open and without normal security measures for several days.
If you cannot remove valuables, store them out of sight.
Use additional video surveillance and lighting
Security systems attached to your home will be under the tent during fumigation.
Consider placing temporary cameras and lighting around the exterior to deter criminal activity.
Stay on the property if possible
Some homeowners stay on-site in an RV during fumigation. Having someone present can help deter crime.
Before doing so, review Lakewood’s rules for RV parking on streets and driveways. Review RV parking rules and permits.
While no method can fully prevent burglary during fumigation, taking these steps can help reduce risk and protect your property.
