Parks, RCS Long-Range Plan

Collage of Lakewood parks and recreation offerings

The City of Lakewood has developed a Parks, Recreation and Community Services Long-Range Plan to guide future investments in parks, progams and facilities.

The Plan outlines priorities for maintaining and improving Lakewood's park system while expanding opportunities for recreation, community services and events.

It reflects extensive community input, with 1,848 residents participating through interviews, focus groups, pop-up events and a citywide survey.

A draft of the Plan was available for public review during a 30-day comment period from July 9 to Sept. 12, 2025.

While the Plan provides a long-term framework, final decision-making authority rests with current and future City Councils based on the needs and priorities of the community.

The documents below are currently being updated to meet accessibility standards and are expected to be available in June. If you need access in the meantime or have questions, Recreation and Community Services staff can help. Contact AccessRecreation@lakewoodca.gov or call 562-866-9771, ext. 2408.

The long-range plan:

  • Engages the Lakewood community through a variety of outreach efforts to reflect resident needs.
  • Incorporates input from advisory boards and key stakeholders to inform decision-making.
  • Provides an overarching investment strategy that balances fiscal responsibility, sustainable management practices, unmet park system needs and evolving recreation trends.
  • Explores options for improvement, re-use, and/or expansion of the park and recreational system.
  • Establishes directions to enhance our parks, recreation facilities, programs, events, and community services to support quality of life, health and wellness, safety, access and community connection.
