Elections and Voter Registration

The Lakewood City Council consists of five members elected to serve a four-year term. Each year, the City Council reorganizes, selecting one council member to serve as mayor and another as vice mayor.

Pursuant to California Elections Code §10403.5(e), the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has approved the City of Lakewood request to consolidate and hold its general municipal election on the same day as the statewide general election.

By-District Elections

With the 2022 election, the City of Lakewood changed to by-district, rather than at-large, elections. Residents elected council members in Districts 1, 2 and 5 for a four-year term. In 2024, Lakewood residents in Districts 3 and 4 elected a council member for a four-year term.

District 1, 2 and 5 elections are held in June in presidential mid-term years. District 3 and 4 elections are held in March in presidential election years. Lakewood elections align with the statewide elections.

Register to vote

For Lakewood residents, the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk website is the primary source for voter registration and local election information.

If you've moved or changed your name, remember to update your voter registration.

Voter registration forms are available online and at many public facilities like Lakewood City Hall, Lakewood libraries and fire stations.

Sample ballots and voter information guides

Residents can expect to receive sample ballots and voter information guides in the mail three to six weeks prior to elections, as well as online through the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk website (lavote.net).
