Report illegal fireworks

Illegal fireworks are dangerous and illegal in Lakewood. Report them right away.

  • If you see or hear illegal fireworks currently in use: Call the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station at 562-623-3500.
  • If illegal fireworks are not currently in use but you know the address where they are repeatedly being used: Report it using the Lakewood Connect app. Download the app in advance from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
  • To report repeat activity by phone: Call City Hall customer service at 562-866-9771, ext. 2140. After hours, leave a message with as much detail as possible, including the address or cross streets.

Illegal fireworks use has increased in recent years across California and the nation. The impact is the same whether a community allows or prohibits safe-and-sane fireworks.

Safe-and-sane fireworks

Lakewood allows the use of “safe-and-sane” fireworks approved by the State Fire Marshal on July 4 only, between 10 a.m. and 11 p.m.

Safe-and-sane fireworks do not explode or go into the air and display the State Fire Marshal seal. Their sound is limited, making them safer for residential neighborhoods. Sales of these fireworks also support local community groups.

Fireworks that explode or launch into the air, such as rockets and firecrackers, are illegal in California and can cause fires, injuries and significant disruption in residential areas.

Before using illegal fireworks, consider this

  1. Veterans may be affected. Loud, unexpected explosions can trigger trauma for veterans living with post-traumatic stress.
  2. Pets are vulnerable. More pets run away on July 4 than any other day due to loud and sudden fireworks.
  3. Fines are significant. Penalties for illegal fireworks can exceed $2,000.
  4. Property owners can be cited. Property owners may be held responsible for illegal fireworks used on their property.

Illegal fireworks can be surrendered at the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station or any Los Angeles County Fire Station. No questions will be asked.
