Many residential projects require review and permits from the City’s Building and Planning Department.

Below are examples of projects that may require permits or review, but the lists are not complete.

Before starting any home improvement project, check with Building and Safety to confirm what is needed.

Start with permitting

Bathroom or kitchen upgrades that are non-structural
Electrical, mechanical, plumbing, re-roofing and sewer work
Inspection requests

Additions and remodeling, including exterior work or interior work in multifamily homes
Accessory dwelling units (ADUs)
Air conditioning units
Front yard landscaping (see Water Wise Landscaping for planning tips)
Porches, patio covers, pools and spas
Solar
Walls and fences
Water heaters located outside or in a garage
Windows, if the number, location or size of openings is changing

A miscellaneous permit is required for work performed without a permit, or for work completed under an expired permit. It is valid for a one-time inspection only.
