Lakewood’s Public Safety Department supports and enhances services provided by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to help keep the community safe.

The department also oversees the Sky Knight helicopter program, school crossing guards and the Neighborhood Watch program.

How Public Safety helps residents

Provides crime prevention education

Public Safety staff research crime prevention strategies and share tips with residents through the Lakewood Connect eMagazine, Lakewood Community News, eWatch and other platforms.

Responds to non-emergency calls

Public Safety Officers (PSOs) are uniformed City employees dispatched by the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station to respond to non-emergency calls, including non-suspect reports and non-injury traffic collisions.

These calls still require documentation for insurance purposes and help the Sheriff’s Station track crime trends.

By handling these calls, PSOs provide faster service to residents and allow deputy sheriffs to remain available for emergency response.

PSOs are also trained in fingerprinting and DNA collection, which helps reduce wait times for evidence collection and supports criminal investigations. They may also testify in court when evidence they collect is used in a case.

Builds community partnerships

Public Safety staff help connect residents with law enforcement through events such as Coffee with a Deputy, neighborhood meetings and community outreach booths at City events.

Residents can also participate in annual events such as the Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Expo and National Night Out.
