Lakewood announces new official government domain

Published on February 28, 2025

New domain is lakewoodca.gov

The City of Lakewood is changing from the lakewoodcity.org domain to lakewoodca.gov as of March 1, to enhance security and be in alignment with best practices.

Why the change?

  • All U.S. cities are required to make this change by 2029, and many neighboring cities are already in the process of changing.
  • Moving to .gov will increase the security and searchability of Lakewood's online presence.
  • The .gov domain assures visitors to our site and those who receive emails from city staff that we are a legitimate government entity. Only qualified government organizations and programs are eligible for a.gov domain.

Why change now?

Lakewood is among the first to change to .gov, as our city staff determined it was most cost effective to make the transition in parallel with other current software and security upgrades.

Will service be interrupted?

No. Visitors to the city’s website will not notice any difference in service as a result of this change, as the current lakewoodcity.org website will automatically redirect visitors to the new lakewoodca.gov domain.

Emails to city addresses that end in lakewoodcity.org will continue to work and be automatically redirected to the corresponding address at lakewoodca.gov.
