Number and type of pets per household
Lakewood city ordinances allow no more than two dogs and no more than two cats per household.
Residents may also keep up to five chickens, rabbits, ducks or pigeons if they are kept in a coop and located at least 35 feet from any residence. View Lakewood Municipal Code (LMC 4191 and LMC 4194.C).
Roosters are not allowed within city limits.
For questions about other types of animals, call 562-866-9771, ext. 2140 or email service1@lakewoodca.gov.
Leash law
Lakewood requires dogs to be on a leash when off the owner’s property. Leashes must be securely and continuously held by a competent person.
Park rules
Dogs are not allowed on grass areas in Lakewood parks but may be walked along the perimeter.
Dogs are only allowed off-leash at Home Run Dog Park at Rynerson Park. Check park rules before visiting.
Licensing
Dog owners must license their pets within 60 days of moving to Lakewood or acquiring a dog.
SEAACA (South East Area Animal Control Authority) issues all pet licenses for Lakewood through a partnership with DocuPet.
Pet licensing is managed through a third-party system. If you need assistance or would like an alternative way to complete your request, contact ADACoordinator@lakewoodca.gov or call 562-866-9771.
