Lakewood residents are invited to attend the city’s annual Memorial Day ceremony honoring the men and women who gave their lives while serving in the United States armed forces. The ceremony will also recognize members of local veterans organizations who have died during the past year.

The Memorial Day ceremony will take place Monday, May 25 at 11 a.m. at the Lakewood Veterans Memorial Plaza at Del Valle Park, located at Woodruff Avenue and Henrilee Street.

The keynote speaker will be retired Navy Capt. Tim L. Daniels, who served on active duty more than 30 years. Daniels concluded his career in 2021 as interim director of the Office of Supply Corps Personnel at Navy Personnel Command.

Deputy Enrique Magdaleno, who currently serves in the military reserves, will read Dennis Lander’s poem, “The Boys of Del Valle Park."

The Troop 134 Honor Guard of Scouting America will present our nation's flag, and the Golden Sands Chorus will provide a musical tribute. A stirring rendition of “Taps” will be performed live and a bagpiper will play “Amazing Grace” as the ceremony concludes.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, attendees will be invited to take a group photo on the plaza in honor of America’s 250th Anniversary.

Seating will be available under a large tent with chairs. There is ample space for guests to bring their own lawn chairs.

Street parking will be available around the park. Disabled parking will be available on the Woodruff Avenue service road immediately adjacent to the memorial. Neighboring residents are encouraged to walk to the park when possible.

The event is sponsored by the City of Lakewood in conjunction with American Legion Post 496 and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 756.

This event is free and open to the public.
