PROCLAIMING JUNE 2026 LGBTQ PRIDE MONTH
WHEREAS,
the month of June is commemorated as LGBTQ Pride Month; the City of Lakewood celebrates the diversity of people and cultures that we are proud to have in Lakewood, including our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer residents; and
WHEREAS,
LGBTQ Pride Month traces its origins to 1969 at the Stonewall Inn in New York City where a courageous group of Americans resisted harassment and mistreatment, setting in motion a chain of events that would become the birth of the modern sexual orientation civil rights movement; and
WHEREAS,
the City of Lakewood stands firmly against prejudice and unjust discrimination based on age, race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression; and
WHEREAS,
the Lakewood City Council strives to make our city the safest, most welcoming place it can be, for everyone;
NOW, THEREFORE, I,
Cassandra Chase, Mayor of Lakewood, on behalf of the Lakewood City Council and the entire Lakewood community, do hereby declare June to be LGBTQ Pride Month in Lakewood and encourage residents to learn more about the history of LGBTQ Americans, their struggles for civil rights, and their many achievements, as our city continues to honor and celebrate the diversity of our residents and our community.
