Contractors State License Board

The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) is a primary resource for consumers working with contractors and the construction industry. The CSLB helps protect homeowners before and after hiring a contractor by licensing and regulating contractors and investigating complaints and fraud.

Scam alert

Lakewood residents, especially older adults, should be aware of home repair scams that can result in poor-quality work or financial loss.

Some contractors may pressure homeowners into unnecessary repairs, offer deals that seem too good to be true, or request immediate decisions. These are common warning signs of a scam.

  • Get at least two estimates from licensed contractors who are known in the community before hiring anyone.
  • Be cautious of contractors offering leftover materials from another job or pressuring you to make an immediate decision.
  • Ask to see the contractor’s pocket license and a valid form of identification. Write down the license number and verify it with the CSLB at 800-321-2752.
  • Never sign an agreement or authorize work without fully reviewing the contract and understanding the scope of work.
  • Pick up a free guide to hiring a contractor at Lakewood City Hall, 5050 Clark Avenue.
  • When in doubt, contact the Lakewood Building Inspection team.
