Patriot Day

Row of American flags

Just two weeks after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, the City of Lakewood organized a community gathering of solidarity at the Lakewood Civic Center.

Every year since, residents have gathered on Sept. 11 to remember those who were lost and to show appreciation for first responders and military personnel who protect and serve communities at home and abroad.

The City of Lakewood invites residents to a flag-lowering ceremony at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 outside City Hall, 5050 Clark Avenue.

The ceremony traditionally includes the presentation of the colors, remarks from Lakewood’s mayor, a keynote speaker, a musical performance and a moment of silence.

At the conclusion of the event, the Los Angeles County Fire Department conducts a bell ringing ceremony and trumpeters from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department play “Taps” as the nation’s flag is lowered for the night.
