Door-to-door soliciting scams

Door-to-door soliciting

Bogus charitable solicitations and “too good to be true” offers are still common. Unless you specifically entered a contest, ignore messages claiming you have won money or prizes. These are almost always scams.

Scams can happen door-to-door, online or by phone. Be cautious. Scammers often use names similar to legitimate charities or businesses to appear credible.

The safest way to donate is by check or credit card directly through a verified mailing address or secure website. Always double-check the organization’s contact information.

If you choose to donate to someone at your door, do not give cash. Write a check or money order to the charitable organization and request a receipt. To ensure your donation is tax deductible, confirm the organization is a qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

If a solicitor comes to your door

  • Look to see who is outside before opening your door.
  • If you are unsure about the organization, ask for identification and verify it by contacting the organization directly. Keep your door closed and locked while doing so.
  • Ask to see a City of Lakewood permit. Solicitors are required to carry and present it upon request. If they cannot provide one, call the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station at 562-623-3500.
  • Verify charities through the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Alliance or call 703-276-0100.
  • Do not feel pressured to donate. Take time to research the organization before contributing.
