Auto Theft

Lock it. Hide it. Take it. Most vehicle break-ins are crimes of opportunity. Vehicles are often left unlocked, and valuables are visible inside.

Thieves commonly walk neighborhoods late at night checking for unlocked doors. Once they find an unlocked vehicle, it only takes seconds to steal items or the vehicle itself.

Some vehicles are more commonly targeted, including:

  • Older vehicles, such as Hondas, Toyotas and GM or Chevy trucks, which may be easier to break into and may not have alarm systems
  • Work trucks and vans, which often contain tools and equipment
  • SUVs, which may be targeted for third-row seats and catalytic converters
  • Trucks, which are often targeted for tailgates

How to protect your vehicle

  • Lock all doors, close windows and set your alarm before leaving your vehicle. Check sunroofs and tailgates
  • If your vehicle does not have an alarm, consider using a steering wheel lock
  • Never leave your key inside the vehicle
  • Never leave your vehicle running or unattended
  • Park in well-lit areas when possible
  • Do not leave valuables inside your vehicle. Even small items like loose change or phone chargers can attract thieves
