Catalytic converters can be stolen in minutes and are expensive to replace. These devices contain valuable metals and are located underneath vehicles, making them attractive targets for thieves.

Many drivers do not realize their converter has been stolen until they start their vehicle and hear a very loud exhaust noise.

The Lakewood Sheriff’s Department reports that most catalytic converter thefts occur between 1 and 5 a.m., when fewer people are outside and vehicles are unattended.

Commonly targeted vehicles

  • Toyota: Corolla, Prius, Tacoma
  • Ford: F-Series, Explorer, Econoline vans
  • Honda: Accord, CR-V
  • Chevrolet: Equinox, Silverado

How to protect your vehicle

  • Park smart: Use a garage when possible or park in well-lit, visible areas
  • Install protection: Ask a mechanic about a catalytic converter shield or cage
  • Mark your converter: Engrave your driver’s license number on the catalytic converter
  • Increase visibility: Use motion lights or security cameras near parking areas

If you see someone underneath a parked vehicle, especially overnight, call 9-1-1 immediately to report suspicious activity.
