Used Oil Recyling Kits
Lakewood residents who change their own motor oil can pick up a free used oil recycling kit at the Public Works counter at City Hall.
The kit includes a reusable 15-quart oil collection container with a screw top and carrying handle, a wide-mouth plastic funnel, a shop rag and a cardboard creeper mat to help catch drips or spills under your car.
When recycling an oil filter, let it drain completely, about 24 hours, before taking it to a recycling center.

Other automotive fluids
Brake fluid, transmission fluid and other automotive chemicals must be kept in separate containers. Do not mix them with used motor oil.
Keep automotive fluids out of gutters, storm drains, yards and regular trash. Used fluids can be saved for household hazardous waste collection events.
Why recycling oil properly matters
Used motor oil can pollute waterways, storm drains and groundwater when it is not recycled properly.
Using a collection kit helps keep used oil out of the ground, storm drains and ocean.
CalRecycle recommends draining used oil into a clean container, not mixing it with other materials and taking it to a household hazardous waste collection facility or used oil collection site.
