Utility worker scams

Utility workers or city crews

Never let someone into your home unless you have verified who they are.

Be cautious of unexpected visits from people claiming to be utility workers or city crews who need access to your property.

Keep these tips in mind:

  • Legitimate visits are typically scheduled in advance with homeowner involvement.
  • City of Lakewood employees and utility workers wear uniforms and carry identification badges.
  • If someone arrives unexpectedly, ask them to wait outside while you verify their identity by calling their employer using a trusted phone number.
  • Do not share your Social Security number or other personal information with someone at your door.
  • If asked to pay for utility service, contact the utility company first. Utility companies do not collect payment in the field.
  • Be cautious of anyone claiming they need to shut off service. Utilities typically provide multiple notices before taking that action.

If you feel a visit is suspicious, call the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station at 562-623-3500. Criminals sometimes use door-to-door visits to scout neighborhoods.
